Mercari cancellations and crosslisting: avoid selling the same item twice
Mercari tracks cancellation rates and can limit selling for frequent cancellers. How double sales happen on Mercari and how to stop them.
Mercari is a favourite second marketplace for Poshmark and eBay sellers, and a frequent source of double sales. Items on Mercari can sell within minutes of being listed or price-dropped, and a cancelled order hurts: Mercari tracks cancellation rates and may limit selling privileges for accounts that cancel often.
Check Mercari’s help center for the current cancellation policy, which can change.
Where double sales come from on Mercari
- Offers and smart pricing: an automatic price drop makes an item sell fast, sometimes on the same day it sells elsewhere.
- Bundles: a buyer bundles several of your items, one of which already sold on another site.
- Late notifications: you see the email hours later.
Prevention checklist
- Turn on Mercari’s sale notifications (push and email) and the same on every other site.
- When an item sells anywhere, open Mercari → Me → Listings → Active, find it, and delete or deactivate it right away.
- Before accepting a bundle offer, confirm every item is still available.
- Keep bins or SKUs in your item descriptions or in a spreadsheet so you can find items fast.
If it sold twice
Cancel the order you can’t fill promptly, message the buyer, and keep the one with the stricter penalty if you have a choice (for many sellers that’s Poshmark because of its 3% rule).
